In his Glencannon series of stories, American author Guy Gilpatric proves his story-telling genius. The stories were written between 1929 and 1941. They follow the adventures of Colin Glencannon, the Scottish Chief Engineer of a tramp freighter, the SS Inchcliffe Castle.
As Colin exercises his guile on an unsuspecting planet, we are treated to perfect diamonds, in story form. Each gem is designed to incapacitate us with laughter. The entire world is the backdrop and the stories unfold in many different ports, which are accurately described as they appeared at the time of writing. Drink a wee drap 'o Duggan's Dew 'o Kirkintilloch while you argue bitterly with one of the English mates, whether or not cats sweat. Glencannon maintained vehemently, that they do, "Copiously, through their feet!” And he was willing to prove this assertion with a scientifically conducted experiment. Do not read this book in bed. Your convulsive laughter could cause you to fall off your bunk.
