Being a quarter Viking via my Swedish grandfather, Erik, I have always had a deep interest in the lore of the Scandinavians. I present Hávamál -The Songs of Hár, a long, rich, enigmatic piece of poetry in that simple spirit. I feel it to be completely proper in our given day, a time of needful change, to include the Wiki information below that precedes the ancient poem. I have edited the content for the sake of clarity and brevity. In my opinion, the unknown authors have brought up some good questions that anyone open-minded and interested in the topic would surely stumble upon themselves as they pondered this or any other ancient text against the dynamic backdrop of today’s world going forward. Yea, even a look backwards will elicit the same questions.
In particular, the stanzas that warn men of the capriciousness of women really stood out to me as being added in to an existing wisdom text. Like chocolate chips in chicken soup, they don’t compliment the overall text and we will never know whose nefarious idea it was to cast them there. We may only conjecture via social archaeology as to what life was like for the ancient Nordic women and girls. I feel to my gnomic core that they were highly respected.
Let’s face it, what sane man would mistreat the person who does all of the work, provides comfort and healing and raises the babies while Pappa is away raiding? Respect and awe of the feminine was once naturally universal, in my opinion, and has been steadily undermined and all but destroyed in the last few thousand years by such powers as would derive benefit and gain from promoting the denigration of women. Powers both religious and secular, from the Via Dolorosa to Wall Street.
Finally, the Hávamál has been used, as have the runes, to cobble together cherry-picked manifestos and codes of conduct in relatively modern times, sometimes in ways that promote agendas of segregation and intolerance. Be it known that in this, Nordic lore is no more susceptible to malicious tampering than is any other lore. I daresay that nothing exists in print (including petroglyphs and papyri) that hasn’t been adulterated in some form over time. Common sense calls into question many existing texts that are taken as inviolate.
This is an interesting and important topic in our time because AI and the internet have sped up social alchemy to such such scope and scale that we are all affected. Let each reach their own interpretations of our old sets of words. The robots are learning from us – what shall we teach them? We are all born with bullshit filters but we are often coerced not to use them by church and by state. I ride a Thunder Bear, willing to think, feel, observe and trust myself. Klaus von See (1981) identifies direct influence of the Disticha Catonis on the Gestaþáttr, suggesting that also this part is a product of the High Medieval Period and casting doubt on the "unadulterated Germanic character" of the poem claimed by earlier commentators.
To the gnomic core of the poem, other fragments and poems dealing with wisdom and proverbs accreted over time. A discussion of authorship or date for the individual parts would be futile, since almost every line or stanza could have been added, altered or removed at will at any time before the poem was written down in the 13th Century. Individual verses or stanzas nevertheless certainly date to as early as the 10th, or even the 9th Centuries. Thus, the line “deyr fé, deyja frændr” ("cattle die, kinsmen die") found in verses 76 and 77 of the Gestaþáttr can be shown to date to the 10th Century, as it also occurs in the Hákonarmál by Eyvindr Skáldaspillir. The Hávamál has been described as a 10th Century poem in some sources. The poems in Hávamál are traditionally taken to consist of at least five independent parts. Loddfáfnismál (stanzas 111–137), a collection of gnomic verses similar to the Gestaþáttr, addressed to a certain Loddfáfnir
Rúnatal or Óðins Rune Song or Rúnatáls-þáttr-Óðins (stanzas 138–145) is a section of the Hávamál where Odin reveals the origins of the runes. In stanzas 138 and 139, Odin describes his sacrifice of himself to himself. The "windy tree" from which the victim hangs is often identified with the world tree Yggdrasil by commentators. The entire scene, the sacrifice of a god to himself, the execution method by hanging the victim on a tree, and the wound inflicted on the victim by a spear, is often compared to the crucifixion of Christ as narrated in the Gospels.
The parallelism of Odin and Christ during the period of open co-existence of Christianity and Norse paganism in the 9th to 12th Centuries, corresponds with the assumed horizon of the poem's composition. and appears in other sources. To what extent this parallelism is an incidental similarity of the mode of human sacrifice offered to Odin and the crucifixion, and to what extent a Pagan influence on Christianity , vice versa; has been discussed by scholars such as Sophus Bugge. The younger Jelling Stone, erected by Harald Bluetooth c. 970, shows the crucifixion of Christ with the victim suspended in the branches of a tree instead of on a cross. The persistence of Odin's self-sacrifice in Scandinavian folk tradition was documented by Bugge (1889) in a poem from Unst on the Shetland Islands:

The songs themselves are not given, just their application or effect is described. They are explicitly counted from "the first" in stanza 146, and "a second" to "an eighteenth" in stanzas 146 to 164, given in Roman numerals in the manuscript. There is no explicit mention of runes or runic magic in the Ljóðatal excepting in the twelfth song (stanza 157), which takes up the motif of Odin hanging on the tree and its association with runes. Nevertheless, because of the Rúnatal preceding the list, modern commentators sometimes reinterpret the Ljóðatal as referring to runes, specifically with the sixteen letters of the Younger Futhark. Müllenhoff takes the original Ljóðatal to have ended with stanza 160, with the final three songs (16th to 18th) taken as late and obscure additions.”
